Creating a world of ones’ own, starting with the pinewood derby

Several years back I heard some of my colleagues talk about Derby cars. Coming from India where I did not know anything about these Derby cars; it was all new to me. I was busy and did not know dig into this either.

Wind forward twenty years … and now I have a 1st grader who is in the Cub Scouts. In the first cubs scouts meeting, I heard the pack leader talk about the pinewood derby cars. Of course that attracted my son to the cub scouts; he likes building things and playing with the cars. And my curiosity came back. We have been investigating and learning more.

One of my friends – Mr. N. – is a pack leader in California. His two sons have gone through the scouts program. He just sent me the pretty picture of this derby car that his second son T built. My understanding is that his derby car is evaluated for construction quality, art work, speed, and stability. This car is beautiful and performed well. No wonder, T won the second place in his regional derby car tournament. Congrats to T.

Manu will enjoy the efforts to build derby cars. He is already talking to me about the base board, axles, and wheels. I eagerly look to see him learn and grow from his hands-on experience. Great job by the scouts program!
